After several days of Betty White not eating her beloved Dubia roaches and hornworms, we knew the time had come to end the fight and bring him some peace. Luckily, the exotic animal vet worked us into her schedule and we laid Betty to rest. The vet was very nice and understanding that even a reptile could be loved. I got to hold Betty after the first injection to relax him. And of course I sang him the Betty White song while I stroked his head. The injection to put Betty "to sleep" worked quickly. In a matter of a few minutes, Betty was gone.
Unfortunately, Betty White is still emaciated and very weak, despite the measures we have been taking. To keep Betty hydrated, we have been giving him a soak twice a day. This seems to relax Betty. She also enjoys the cuddles afterward while I hold him in a towel to warm him up. I gently stroke his head, while talking to him and singing my Betty White Song I made up lol. That song always manages to calm Betty down. I think he recognizes my voice and remembers that he can trust me.
Finally today, we were able to score an appointment at a local vet practice that recently added an exotic vet to their team.
They did a thorough examination, and completed a reptilian comprehensive profile blood panel. Betty also received another subcutaneous fluid injection in hopes of rehydrating him. Realizing the strain Betty's illness is having on his body, I felt that it was important to discuss the possibility of euthanasia. The vet explained the process, which is similar to putting down a dog or cat. I decided to take Betty home and continue our course of action. Since Betty was still eating well, I thought we had a chance to save her.
June, 2024...Weasley is growing so fast. i love how he/she makes use of the entire enclosure we built for him. Check out the Beardie page for some updated pics.
Sadly, Betty white is fighting for his life. Yes a vet sexed him and he is a boy...named Betty White lol. We drove almost 2 hours one way to see a reptile vet. Nothing seems to be helping Betty. We are doing everything we can. please keep Betty in your thoughts and prayers.
Update 06/12/24: Betty White is gaining strength and eating salad again. She is still loving her Dubia roaches and occasional hornworm. His legs are getting stronger and he is holding himself up again. Betty is still very skinny, but we have hope that he is turning the corner on whatever has caused this unknown illness.
Can't find an exotic animal vet in our area or one that is taking new patients. After an in depth search, we were able to make an appointment with an exotic pet vet in the Catskill's approximately 2 hours away. Betty White has rapidly become emaciated and weak. The Catskill's vet gave Betty fluids, did some initial blood work, and started an antibiotic. As a precaution, Betty received a round of worming medication. We also started Betty on a liquid for critical care omnivores. That was a little tricky because a syringe had to be used to get the fluid in his mouth. Betty actually did not fight this too much. The vet determined that Betty had an ADENO Virus, which is an auto-immune disease and additionally Betty was suffering from liver disease.

Sadly, Betty white is fighting for his life. Yes a vet checked and he is a boy...named Betty White lol. After 7 years of calling Betty a she, it feels awkward using a he. So if I make a mistake regarding Betty's gender, please give me a pass.
Anyway back to Betty's health. It is obvious that we need to find an exotic animal vet pronto.
