Unfortunately, labs and other floppy ear dog breeds are susceptible to ear infections. Many times it ends up being a yeast infection. Regardless, the ear gets itchy. Then, the head/ear shaking begins. Rarely, this ccause a hematoma in the floppy ear itself. Blood and clots form filling up the ear flap creating a bulge.
The vet surgically fixed the ear by creating a couple long incisions to drain and then sewed the cartilage back to the inside tissue.
Gus only had to sport this snug head wrap overnight. I stayed up all night but fell asleep at 5:30am. Within the next hour he managed to pull the wrap back off his head, which caused some nasty bleeding. I will spare us all those pictures.
Gus is not very fond of the donut, but he hated the e-collar we tried at first. So far he hasn't taken out any stitches by itching with his only remaining hind leg. He is being a good boy and leaving it alone. Be brave ole boy, you only have 3 weeks of the donut, then back to normal.
You can see what a beautiful doggo Joshy is. Every day he makes headway as far as his anxiety. It is slow going but any progress forward is positive.
We are determined to give him his best life...
He joins us 'upstairs' most of the day instead of sleeping in the downstairs bathroom, He paces a lot but has started playing with the other dogs in the living room, sometimes lays down on a dog bed, sits with us at the dinner table, joins us in the bathroom (which always includes most of the dog pack...they say that the dogs are protecting you like they would in nature when you are most vulnerable. We get a lot of that kind of protection! LOL). Sometimes Josh even lays on the couch with Momz, but that is still a rare occasion.
One of his newest breakthroughs is walking over to Momz for pets and lovin'.

September 17th, 2022, Tracie, Mercie and I flew to Florida to help celebrate our bestie's, Pam & Lee's, birthdays. We stayed at a Bed & Breakfast set up for dogs too. Mercie loved it. We were also there to celebrate the completion of their new swimming pool, which was beautiful adorned with incredible landscaping and lighting. unfortunately, as the day progressed I realized that I wasn't feeling well. In true BeauGus Life fashion I proceeded to come down with the 'C' word. The symptoms came on fast and harsh. Tracie tried to extend out time at the Bed & Breakfast, but alas they had new renters scheduled to come in the same day we were supposed to depart. Tracie found us a hotel with a separated bedroom so I could sleep in the bed and Trace and Mercie in the main living room. Trace made contact with the airline. We were told we could no longer fly home, so after many phone calls Trace rented a new car to drive home. Of course we couldn't keep the current vehicle, that would be too easy. Tracie drove to the airport and switched cars, then also drove the a CVS to pick up COVID medication my doctor had prescribed for me. In the meantime our wonderful friends, Pam and Lee, went grocery shopping for us so that we would have something to eat. They dropped the groceries off at our hotel for us. It was a sure thing that we were not going to starve! The first night was horrible. My COVID symptoms were awful. While I was suffering Tracie planned out our return home. Because I was so sick we divided the trip home into 8 or 9 hour increments, made reservations at a hotel for the night and so on. We flew out of New Jersey, so our first, FINAL Destination, was near the airport where we parked our car. Because I had not packed my complete bottle of each of my daily prescribed medications, we also had to have our doctor call in small prescriptions of those meds too. So on the day we had to be out of the hotel by noon, Tracie drove to the same Florida CVS to pick them up. And in another true BeauGus Life fashion, Tracie entered the wrong hotel in her GPS, so she got lost on her way back to me. In the meantime, I was freaking out because I thought we needed to be out of our room by noon. So I started packing and moving our suitcases and gear outside of the door to our room. And wouldn't you know it...one of those times I opened the entry door, Mercie ran out of the room and down the hall. It should be known that I had a high fever and felt rather delirious, so catching Mercie on a zoomies tear was not going to be easy. Thankfully, Mercie ran down the hall and into a room that the maid was cleaning. The maid scooped Mercie up and gently handed her to me. I am certain she could see the panic on my face. I carried Mercie back to our room and carefully continued to pack and move our suitcases, food and other items into the hall. I don't know how, but I managed to get everything out of the room before noon. I was wringing wet from the fever, seeing double and I swear triple at times. I must have looked like death warmed over. Now that I had everything out of the room, my next challenge was how do I get all of our belongings to the lobby. Just as I was preparing to lose it over the next obstacle a male hotel employee walked by and asked if I needed a cart to move my things. I swear I almost cried as he came to my rescue. He even helped me pile my mess of stuff onto the cart. At this point I didn't even have the strength to wheel the cart to the elevator and worse, I had no clue which way down the hall the elevator even was. luckily the gentleman could tell that I was less than competent to achieve anything at that moment and he pushed the cart to the elevator for me. Needless to say I gave the maid and the gentleman a decent tip for saving me from what would have been a terrible failure on my part. Somehow I made it to the hotel lobby and an area where I could sit and rest. I could barely keep my head up at this point. I lost track of how long I waited, but it seemed like forever. Eventually Tracie figured out her GPS error and she reached our hotel. I think that was one of my happiest moments seeing her walk through the hotel entrance,,,my saving grace.

Mercie loved the pool. Can't ya tell by the speed she is swimming to the stairs? lol
For several years, we enjoyed special Momz and Labz vacations on the Delaware River at a fly fishing camp. We stayed in beautiful log cabins along the river. It was a great time to be able to concentrate on just Gus and Beau, and for them to be able to enjoy the nature that abounded there.
For several years we have taken Beau & Gus on their own vacation to the Delaware River.
Sometimes Beau has other ideas. Hmm I wonder what he's thinking?
Uh huh! I see the plan developing!
But Momz, I jist wanted ta take a little swimmy!
As mentioned before, Josh has extreme anxiety and fear around just about everything except for Momz Tracie & Kim and sis Jennifer. Even with us he gets scared if we move too fast, raise an arm up, etc...he wants to participate in things, but can't bring himself to do it.
The beginning of the visit he spent hiding behind Momz Tracie, who sat on the floor with him to make him feel safe.
Gradually, Joshy peeked his head out more and more.
Finally, Josh relaxed enough to give us a smile.
Aunt Beth helped us with his 2nd trip to the vet. He did some heavy shedding, but let Aunt Beth pet him and he didn't hide as much.
